The book begins with a prologue that describes the post-tsunami situation in Aceh and Nias, when people were trying to retrieve their land and prioritising seeking assistance to rebuild their houses.

For Aryo, neither the choice of interesting aspects in this process, nor the selection of an exemplary village was easy. His patience in struggling with time constraints and his faithfulness in following through as events unfolded paid off. Geunteng Timur village in Batee District, Pidie was finally selected as the location. Why?

People in Nias may have thought that they lived in a safe area after all. Indeed the December 26^th, 2004 earthquake and the subsequent tsunami, which had devastated Aceh, Sri Lanka, parts of India and parts of Thailand had only afflicted minor damage to the Indian Ocean island, which is only a half day’s boat ride away from Sumatra. Then on March 28^th, 2005 another strong earthquake occurred and this time Nias was in the centre.
